About Aging in Place Cumberland1

In 2014, the Town of Cumberland, Maine, became aware of the growing need for services for its older citizens. A group of community members, working with the Town Council, formed the Aging in Place Committee to survey town residents regarding their goals and needs as they approached retirement and beyond. Consequently, the group formed Aging in Place Cumberland to provide needed services to the town’s older population and ensure that older citizens are included in the life of the community.

Today that initiative has developed into a thriving, vibrant organization, fueled almost exclusively by an energetic corps of volunteers dedicated to making a difference in the lives of their neighbors as they age. As a result of the efforts of dozens of volunteers and with the full support of town leaders and the Town Council, Aging in Place (AIP) Cumberland offers rides to hundreds of older residents each year, provides friendly visitors who develop a caring relationship with the seniors they visit on a regular basis, and assists older homeowners who need a hand with yard work, shoveling, and minor home repairs. In addition, the organization presents a monthly social program for seniors and works with the Fire Department and others to provide durable medical equipment, safety checks, and a call-in program for those who live alone.

Listed on this website are resources and services provided by AIP Cumberland as well as those available through our many partners. We will continue to update the listings as new programs and services become available.
